About the Project

Picture
Chile, and the Andes in general, are a world class region of snowboarding and skiing, providing the second highest mountain range in the world. Even though winter sports are slowly becoming popular in this area, little on-hands, down-to-earth rider information is available to the snowboarding community. The aim of this project is to identify and display the pro's and con's of this area, creating information that really is of useful value to riders. Chilean or overseas - anyone wants to know what really to expect, before spending the time, effort and money of going to a remote region for getting his austral winter fix.

The project will begin in early July and will last until the end of September. The plan is to visit firstly the ski areas around the Santiago Metropolitan area; Ski Portillo, Valle Nevado, El Colorado and La Parva; before heading further south to the ski areas of the Southern Area such as Corralco, Ski Pucón, Antillanca and Termas de Chillán. If time and money allows the resorts of Cerro El Fraile and Cerro Mirador will be visited as well, having covered all the major resorts of Chile.

Having close relations to Motivados.cl (a Chilean social project for integrating people to snow sports) and being friends with locals working at the ski resorts will be beneficial for me to get closer and more detailed information of places visited and help me find my way to what really is worth documenting.

About a week will be spent at each resort, differing plus/minus a few days according to size and interest of the location. Focus will be put on backcountry accessibility off the slopes, as well as day hikes around the resort; snow park features and maintenance (rails, kickers, rollers, etc.); and finally the general slopes (levels of difficulty, crowdedness, prices, lift waiting times, etc.). In addition accommodation and board options will be reviewed, emphasizing on low-budget options and deals.

What makes this project different?

The entire project wants to explore the possibilities of snowboarding/skiing in Chile for regular, normal income people, that just love the sport, but are not blessed with not having to worry about spending. After all alone a flight to Chile leaves a big hole in the wallets of most.
In accordance with this outline transportation and housing will be done in a budget manner by me. Meaning i.e. couchsurfing, hitch-hiking or public transport to access locations and areas and stocking up on food in super markets, etc.

The publicity and outreach of the project will be documented in photographic form, possibly accompanied by video material. The experience and review of the respective ski resorts will be published in form of articles and reports. This material will be offered to a snowboarding magazines and online communities, TV-stations and other media hubs as the project is concluded.
During the project live-blogging will inform followers of the progress and development, giving an insight of what might be expected of the entire material once the work has been finished.
