After a 30 minute ride up the mountain and ever-growing bad weather we got stuck in the last meters of the way and had to walk up. Up at the station it was dumping snow, so visibility was zero.. total white-out! After buying tickets I got onto the 2-chair which is the main-lift to get "into" the ski resort. It's a really old and slow lift which takes you to the restaurant, where you can either head back down a very flat way back to the bottom lift or choose to head further up with one of the T-Bars or chairlifts. There are 2 chairlifts on the far left (facing the volcano) which make the impression as if they'd bring you to some sweet and more inclined backcountry possibilites. I was told by ski patrol that the far left one is never opened and has been dismounted and the one further right of that only opens about once a year. So don't get fooled... The other lifts keep you in a pretty flat and amateur region. The far right one wasn't open that day but supposedly opens normally.
The afternoon brought some clearing in the weather and the impressive, majestic volcano showed its amazing faces and open fields. Also the sun brought some contrast so I was able to explore some of the pow pow that was as fresh as bread 5 in the morning in the bakery. If there was some more inclination it would have been a perfet ride, but still was enjoyable. The park was pretty much run down, with only one, unshaped kicker. There were about 3 rail options.
Conclusion: Pucon is a pretty basic place, more recommendable for amateur skiers and boarders. If you really want to get into some action at this place I'd recommend bringing some snowshoes or a split-board, get up at dawn and hike up the amazing volcano (beware - depending on wind direction the fumes can make it impossible or a big health risk to go up there, also there exist cravasses) and ride down one of it's many huge untouched, rock-free powder fields. I am definitely coming back to do the volcanoes in this region of Chile! They recommend taking a guide for walking up the volcano, but various sources told me it's not mandatory.
